Bird Feeder Photo Project

9297.jpgAt the end of January I put up a bird feeder in my yard so I could get some photos of wild birds. It's worked out quite nicely and I've been introduced to a lot of bird behavior that I didn't know about before.

Of course I've been taking photos of the birds as they grab seeds from the feeder since I've had it. At first I was thinking that it was kind of lame to have all these photos of wild birds with a bird feeder in every shot. But when I put it in the context of a bird feeder project, all of a sudden the feeder becomes a meeting place instead of a distraction.

So, enjoy my set of bird feeder photos from the past 5 months. You'll see cardinals, finches, chickadees, nuthatches, a squirrel, a chipmunk, and of course the tufted titmouse (which just may be the most fun bird name ever).

Enjoy the photos... see them by clicking your mouse right here.

Breakdown and a daylily

I was really hoping to have some cool skateboarder photos to show off tonight. But my motorcycle died while I was driving to that event... in the big dig tunnel on route 93 in Boston. That was a bad experience and by the time I got my bike hauled away and got back home, it was too late to get to the skateboarding event.

Because I got no photos today, I decided to experiment with lighting tonight and came away with this shot of a daylily after it closed up for the day.

... and a chipmunk

chipmunk.jpgI had this little guy lined up for a great shot, but there was a piece of grass that was right in front of his face. A few minutes later he gave me this great photo op with out the blade of grass getting in the way.

Cardinal Closeup

cardinal.jpgIt was a real good few days for wildlife photos. A deer on Friday afternoon, a chipmunk (photos to be posted a little later) and a ton of birds at the bird feeder this afternoon.

The whole reason behind setting up a bird feeder was to get some photos of the cardinals that hang around my yard. Of course there have been many other birds that I've been able to shoot (with the camera, not with a bb gun) since I set it up in January, and I've just started thinking about a project to put together the best photos from the bird feeder. At first I thought it was kind of cheesy to have a bird feeder in almost all of my wild bird photos, but I think it'll be fine if it becomes a set of photos that show off the birds that visit people's backyard feeders.

Deer time...

On Fridays when I come home from work I tend to avoid the highway and enjoy the motorcycle ride along some back roads. About half way home today I spotted this deer eating some grass in a small open field. So I pulled over and took out my camera, getting some some very good shots. Here are a couple for you to look at.

Return of the Rabbit

I was thinking out loud this past weekend when I wondered where the rabbits had gone that nibbled on the overgrown grass in my yard last summer. After I ate dinner tonight, I spotted the first rabbit of the year eating some grass just outside my door. So of course I turned it into a photo shoot. Having woods and wetlands behind my house certainly helps the wildlife population and makes taking photos of wild animals a little easier.rabbit1.jpg

Later in the evening I looked out my living room window and saw the moon lighting up the clouds in a real nice way. I grabbed my tripod and experimented with camera settings to try to get a nice shot. At the very least, this is an interesting shot of the clouds with some pale moonlight on them.moonlight.jpg

A light at sunset

sunset light.jpgWith all the humidity around this weekend, the sunsets have looked nice. Of course having all that extra moisture in the air really helps give some nice colors to the summer evening.

I have some inside info on a nesting loon that I may be able to get photos of next weekend. That'd be much cooler than a sunset.
