New England Patriots 16-0

The New England Patriots have just finished up the regular season without a single loss, meaning the new words that will be overused in the media for the next couple of weeks are “perfect” and “history”. If you're a Patriots fan then you probably won't get tired of hearing and reading those words in every football story for the next week or two. Their use will fade slightly during the playoffs, but then they will make a remarkable comeback if the Patriots are able to win the Superbowl.

The team took to the practice fields behind Gillette Stadium in full pads on the morning of July 27th to begin their first training camp practice and start working on an undefeated regular season as a few thousand fans watched from the bleachers. There was great applause and cheering every time Randy Moss got his hands on the ball and it looked too easy for him. Tom Brady was intense and focused during every phase of those summer practices and only let out his trademark smile when he was signing autographs after practice was over. Fans were excited, but no one was talking about an undefeated season.

Here we are 5 months later and every sports fan is talking about the 16-0 record.

While you'll be bombarded with “perfect” and “history”, my guess is that the two important words you'll be hearing and reading about the Patriots after the first Sunday in February is “Superbowl champions”.

See how it all started by taking a look at photos I took during this year's training camp in the portfolio section.

Winter

Snow on Winter Street.jpgWinter is officially here and there's been plenty of snow so far where I live. I was awake early on Friday morning and grabbed my camera when I saw how nice the snow looked sitting on the trees. The sun was blocked by an overcast sky, but the lighting was good. Rain is forecast tomorrow and that should wash away a lot of the snow, though I think there will still be enough left to make it a white Christmas.

Carvings

Noon Hill Tree.jpgI went snowshoeing to the top of Noon Hill in Medfield, MA today. From the top, Gillette Stadium is visible about 4 or 5 miles away and the Blue Hills can be seen if you shift your eyes north.

During my adventure through the snow, I spotted this old birch tree that had several initials carved in it. The two carvings that stuck out to me are shown in this blog's photo. Are they really from 1974? And could BB be Bill Belichick? We may never know, just like we don't know how many licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie pop.

Snow!!!

Tree Tunnel.jpgA very nice light fluffy snow fell yesterday afternoon and evening, and to me that means winter is officially here. There's technically about a week more of autumn left, but when there's 10 inches of snow I'll call it winter.

Two Christmases ago my parents gave me snowshoes. Today was the fourth time I've been able to use them because of the inconsistency of New England winters. There's another storm on its way for Sunday, and that may be snow, sleet, or rain... no one's sure yet, but weather forecasters don't earn their money by being accurate anyway.

More Ice

bright sun-sm.jpgI took a very slippery walk through the woods this morning in an attempt to photograph some of the ice covered trees. Unfortunately, there wasn't quite enough of a coating of ice and I waited a bit too long to get out there so the sun wasn't at a great angle either. So, the icy branches that I took photos of just look kind of wet, and looking wet isn't as nearly as exciting as being caked with ice.

I just ended up experimenting with the camera settings and ended up with a nice picture taken directly into the sun. Shooting into the sun doesn't generally make for a good photo, but I like this particular shot came out. I squeezed the aperture down to f/16 to get the sparkling look for the sun (or whatever you want to call how it looks).

Freezing Rain

Lamp with Ice-sm.jpgThe forecast last night was for sleet, but it ended up just being freezing rain. As much as I love winter storms, I could do without the coating of ice on my steps. You see, I'm looking forward to a big snow storm that dumps a good two feet of snow so I can get out with my snowshoes and get some nice snowy winter photos.

Until then you'll have to deal with icy photos like the one in this post. I mean, it's still a good photo, but playing outdoors in the snow is a lot more fun than playing outdoors in the ice.

BCS, Kornheiser, A Gift, Christmas

Video Podcast, December 4, 2007

My first video podcast since September. I talk about some football, some Christmas, and a special gift.

The file is a bit larger than it has been in the past, but the benefit is that you can play it on your video iPod. And what's better than my face and voice on your iPod?

P.S. It looks people are having no luck by just clicking on the link at the beginning of this post..... so, you'll either have to right click and save that link, or get this podcast through iTunes (for free, of course).
