World Series Parade - Full Set of Photos

http://www.gregburt.com/blogimages/2007/10/DSC_8222-blog-thumb.jpgI just posted 41 of the photos that I took during yesterday's victory parade. You can find them in the portfolio section, or you can just click here

It was very obvious that Curt Schilling was saying goodbye to the Boston fans. He had that sad looking "I know it's over" type of smile and kept patting his heart with his hand. I get the feeling that the Red Sox are not going to offer him the kind of money he wants, but I think some team will want to pay him what he's looking for.

What amazed me was that even though the Red Sox didn't have to play against the Yankees in the playoffs, there were still some anti-Yankee signs along the parade route. Thankfully I only had to withstand one "Yankees suck" chant, and I'm a little miffed at how obsessed some Red Sox fans are with a team that hasn't played a game in 3 weeks. Let it go. The Yankees don't suck, the Kansas City Royals do.

T-shirt of the day... just outside of Back Bay station there was a guy selling t-shirts for this weekend's football showdown between the Patriots and Colts. The front side of the shirt said, "I hate Peyton Manning". The back said, "Eli sucks, too".

Red Sox World Series Parade

http://www.gregburt.com/blogimages/2007/10/DSC_8288-thumb.JPGBoston was packed with fans during today's victory parade on the duck boats. Lots of dancing, waving, cheering, and of course hoisting the trophy up for everyone to see.

I'm working through all of my photos from the parade right now and I'll have a full set posted soon.

Red Sox - World Series Champions

First it was an 86 year wait between World Series titles, and now it was just a 3 year wait for the second one in our lives. A sweep for the Sox and series MVP for Mike Lowell.

I'll be at the official celebration in Boston providing plenty of photo coverage. And of course all the highlights will be posted right here that night... either Tuesday or Wednesday is my best guess.

Champagne showers for everyone!

The Frog Says...

http://www.gregburt.com/blogimages/2007/10/frog-blog-thumb.jpgThe old railroad bed that I've been hiking near my house for the past few weeks has been a gold mine for wildlife photos. This frog dove into a puddle when I came along, but then just floated there while I took a few photos. I guess frogs feel safe when they're in the water. Either that, or it was blinded by my flash and couldn't see well enough to find an escape route.

Flying Lawn Chair

http://www.gregburt.com/blogimages/2007/10/ultralight1-blog-thumb.jpgI was sitting in my apartment watching football this evening when I heard the buzz of a 2 stroke engine. It sounded like it was in the air so I went outside to look and saw a powered parachute. After doing about 10 minutes of online research, I guess it's one of the flying machines in the ultralight class.

This thing flew close to my apartment, but not over it so I couldn't get a very good photo, but having it just out of reach made me want to chase it down so I could get a closeup view.... and that's what I did. My guess was that the pilot had taken off from the Wrentham State School fields, and I was right. Shortly after I got there, I was greeted by a security guard who asked if I knew who owned the minivan with the trailer on it. I said I didn't know, though I assumed it belonged to whoever was flying the ultralight. He seemed suspicious that I was there with my camera, but he came back about ten minutes later and said he called the police chief who told him that the guy flying the ultralight had permission to use the field. After that, the security guard, Mike, was very friendly.

When the pilot was coming in for a landing I got a few photos and then went over to talk to him with Mike. I spent the next hour there just listening to stories.

As the pilot starts telling us all about his ride, which he said is commonly referred to as a flying lawn chair, I picked up an accent that I thought was German. Later on, he told us that he learned to fly at age 15 in Germany as part of military training during World War II. That was in 1943. The deal in Germany was that you decided which branch of the military you wanted to go into and you started your training in that discipline as a teenager. Part of the training for those who wanted to fly was building planes to learn all the mechanics, but they weren't allowed to fly those planes, because.... well, would you want to fly a plane built by a bunch of teenagers who had no plane building experience?

http://www.gregburt.com/blogimages/2007/10/ultralight2-blog-thumb.jpgIt turns out this powered parachute thing is an expensive hobby. The whole thing is about a $15,000 investment, and I was told that the parachute should be replaced with every 300 hours of flying time... and that's a $5,000 piece of equipment itself. Yikes!

This guy said he also built himself a small helicopter in 1980 that he never flew. It was apparently something that was about the same size as what he was flying tonight. But he said he built it based on how much he weighed then, and after quitting smoking he gained weight that he has never been able to take off and the ballast required to make the thing fly level would be too much for it to handle.

I could bore you with some more numbers that I heard all about in that conversation, but I won't. So just enjoy the couple of photos I've posted here instead.

Jim & Tasha's Wedding

I shot another wedding last weekend and the highlights are ready to go. Click here to check them out.

After the last wedding I photographed, I promised to set it up so that people could buy prints. I got a bit busy, but I'll have time to get that set up over the weekend. So if you attended a wedding I photographed and would like to buy a print or two, you'll be able to do that beginning Monday morning.

Eye Of The Storm

http://www.gregburt.com/blogimages/2007/10/crocker%20pond%20panorama-sm-thumb.jpgI was up early this morning and found some great light for outdoor photos. There was a storm moving through and although it was nowhere close to tropical storm status, it was strong enough to have an eye so the sun leaked through for an hour or so in between the clouds and rain. The dark clouds in the background with the golden light on the trees made for a great view and a real nice photo. I hope you like it, too.

Fowler's Toad

http://www.gregburt.com/blogimages/2007/10/fowlers%20toad-blog-thumb.jpgDespite the light rain and drizzle, I decided to take a hike through the woods again today and I got a real nice photo of a toad. It is officially called a Fowler's Toad and is common here in MA.

Snapping Turtle

http://www.gregburt.com/blogimages/2007/10/snapping%20turtle-thumb.jpgI set out to explore the old railroad bed that runs through the woods near my apartment today and I found this snapping turtle walking across the path near a pond. When it first noticed me, it turned to face me and stand its ground. After about 5 minutes, it got bored with me taking photos and continued the journey from the pond to the shallow muddy stream on the other side of the path, doing a belly slide down the slope and into the water.

Spiders and Ladybugs Don't Play Well Together

http://www.gregburt.com/blogimages/2007/10/spider%20eating%20ladybug-thumb.jpgLadybugs have invaded the corner of my kitchen near the outside door and after vacuuming up the bunch that was there yesterday, there's a new group there today. But that just happens around this time of year.

One of the ladybugs proved that going over to greet the spider that has taken up residence in the corner will never end well... for the ladybug, at least.

Green Grasshopper

http://www.gregburt.com/blogimages/2007/10/grasshopper-closeup-text-thumb.jpgThis grasshopper was crawling on my kitchen door this afternoon so I did an impromptu photo shoot with it.

What I really liked about this shot in particular is how it really shows detail in the face, especially the eye. It's definitely worth the effort to click the thumbnail so you can see the larger version.
