Water Snake

http://www.gregburt.com/blogimages/2007/06/watersnake-sm-thumb.jpgI was on a hike this morning and stumbled upon this water snake who was sitting on the shore of a pond. It's back end was sticking out onto the path I was walking on and it didn't take off, so I took some snake portraits.

It's a Northern Water Snake and is fairly common in Massachusetts. They are not poisonous, but they will bite repeatedly if cornered or threatened. Knowing that, I didn't corner or threaten it. This is the biggest snake I can remember seeing in the wild and is much bigger than any garter snake you'd run across. I didn't break out the tape measure to get an accurate length, but it looked to be about 2 or 2 1/2 feet long.

Up for Breakfast

About 15 minutes ago I saw a couple of rabbits eating the grass just outside my door. They put up with me taking photos for a few minutes, then they decided to make a run for it.

Butterfly and Catbird

The animals were out in force today. When I walked into my parents' back yard this morning to do some yard work for them, there were two woodchucks and a rabbit who all scattered when they saw me coming. The birds and butterflies weren't as scared of me as these photos show...

Daylily

http://www.gregburt.com/blogimages/2007/06/daylily-thumb.jpgThe daylilies have started to bloom. They'll go for another month or so.

This one was an outside flower, and has much more spectacular color than the ones I have sitting in a jar in my apartment. Of course, the ones sitting inside my apartment produced five flowers today. None of them looked as good as the one in the photo.

After The Rain

http://www.gregburt.com/blogimages/2007/06/wet%20bird-bw-thumb.jpgAfter it finished raining this afternoon, there were a lot of animals outside eating and drying off. The bird in the first picture here was shaking itself dry on a tree branch and didn't seem to mind me getting close to it. Click it to zoom in.

Loon

http://www.gregburt.com/blogimages/2007/06/Loon-thumb.jpgI'm camping in New Hampshire for the weekend and while out on my father's boat got to see a loon fairly close up... about 50 feet away at the closest. They're neat looking birds.

This is just a quick picture for now, and I'll be pulling out and posting a few of the best shots I got today once I get back home and have some time to sit at my desk.

Tree Swallows

http://www.gregburt.com/blogimages/2007/06/birds-sm-thumb.jpgI've been taking a tour of the conservation areas in Wrentham, and I found my favorite one so far... the Birchwold Farm conservation area in West Wrentham. It's 129 acres with plenty of trails and a pretty good variety of terrain and wildlife.

In the open field near the parking area there are a bunch of bird boxes and there were a few tree swallows gathering food and bringing it back to their babies. Of course I didn't see the babies, because they're inside the box, but I did hear them. The odd thing about this was that there were three birds that seemed to all be bringing food to the box I was taking pictures of. There was a small scuffle between two of the birds, so maybe the third bird wasn't welcome.

Here's a link to a brochure that has maps and a brief description and history of all the conservation areas in Wrentham. Wrentham Guide to Open Spaces and Conservation Lands
