Mill Fire In Pawtucket

http://www.gregburt.com/blogimages/2007/03/fire5-thumb.jpgI was listening to the radio this morning and heard about a mill fire in Pawtucket, RI, so I took a drive over there and looked for smoke. I found it. It's a 3 alarm blaze that started shortly before 8:30 this morning and pulled in fire crews from Pawtucket, Central Falls, and Providence.

The exact location was at the corner of Pine St. and Conant St. All reports I've read say that there was no one inside the building when the fire started, and the firefighters had it under control within a couple of hours.

I saw most of the Providence media outlets there, so it was a pretty big deal. Of course I think my photos are better than the ones on the Providence Journal website, but that could just be my ego talking.

The Store Is Open

After lots of procrastination and a few bumps along the road, I have finally put together a snazzy online store. OK, so maybe it's not all that flashy, but it gets the job done. Currently there are 27 of my photos for sale as matted and framed prints. Shipping is free, so click on "Store" in the menu on the left and have fun shopping.

Hawk

http://www.gregburt.com/blogimages/2007/03/hawk1-thumb.jpg

http://www.gregburt.com/blogimages/2007/03/hawk2-thumb.jpgThis hawk flew over my head when I was outside trying to take pictures of other birds today. It was cool to see the hawk, but all the other birds took off. Anyway, these are the two shots I was able to get.

Snow... Finally

http://www.gregburt.com/blogimages/2007/03/Snow%20Turtle-thumb.jpgFor the first time this winter it's snowing hard where I live. The best part of winter is the snow, and I was starting to get tired of the rain and sleet that's been dumped on us. This storm is going to end up as rain but not before we get about 6 to 8 inches of snow.

Looks like it's time for snowball fights and snowmen!

Another podcast for your waiting ears.

New Camera and a Pecker

http://www.gregburt.com/blogimages/2007/03/another%20pecker-thumb.jpg
I'm excited for many reasons right now. One of those reasons is that I got myself a spiffy new digital SLR camera with a snazzy telephoto lens. The picture you see in this post is a fairly average shot, but it's cool because it shows off how close I can get to birds before they fly away in a panic. This bird is a Flicker which is in the woodpecker family (I think). I did some quick research today, and if I'm wrong I'll post a correction asap.

I plan on posting a new podcast in the next day or so. Check back for that.

And It Rained

http://www.gregburt.com/blogimages/2007/03/Rainy%20Workers-thumb.jpgIt wasn't so much of a winter storm around here as it was a flooding rain. The ground is mostly frozen so the water had nowhere to go but the streets, rivers, streams, ponds, etc. The picture here was the scene near my house as highway department workers were clearing out street drains.

Tomorrow night (Saturday) just after sunset there will be a full lunar eclipse. On the east coast of the U.S. the moon will be fully eclipsed as it rises. It will all be over by about 7:00 EST. If you've never seen a lunar eclipse before, I'd suggest making an effort to see it. The moon will be either orange or red during the eclipse as it reflects all the sunrise and sunset light from all over the earth. You'll like it. If you don't get a chance to see it, I should get some pictures of it that I'll post here.
